How I became a starwalker

The long version, for anyone who likes to know who they are walking with.

  1. Fifteen years of marriage

My husband and I have been married fifteen years now.

Growing alongside one person through every version of ourselves has been one of the great teachers of my spiritual life. It's a big part of why I can meet you in the tender, complicated places of your own relationships... so much of our becoming happens there.

  2. Portland opened the door

In our early twenties we left our hometown for Portland, Oregon, and stayed five years. My husband became a yoga teacher. I began reading tarot professionally.

It was in those years that I learned shamanic journeying from Wendy EagleWolfe, who was teaching it as a continuing education course for nurses. She also taught me the ancient art of the psychopomp, the sacred work of helping souls who have died find their way across.

And it was through journeying that I first met my guide in the upper world. Her name is Isis.

  3. It's Isis, it's Isis, it's Isis

While we were in Portland, I also mentored personally with Kaia Ra, author of The Sophia Code. The night before our first session, a familiar voice, one I had spoken with in my mind many times before, kept repeating the same words over and over.

    It's Isis. It's Isis. It's Isis.

The next day, the very first thing Kaia said to me was, “Whoa, I feel a very strong presence of Isis around you.” In our work together, she told me I was a priestess of Isis.

I didn't know what to make of that. Part of me knew, instinctively, that it was true. The rest of me kept asking who I was, some random girl from the Midwest, to claim a connection with an ancient Egyptian goddess.

After our mentorship ended, our little family moved to Florida for a short season. One day I felt guided to go to a local church, which I had never once felt the desire to do. I'm not religious. The first thing I saw inside was an altar to Mother Mary and Isis, with statues of Isis and paintings of her on the walls so beautiful they stopped me in my tracks. I just stood there, stunned. It was the wildest synchronicity, and the clearest confirmation I could have asked for.

She has come to me many times since. The most powerful vision of my life was hers.

  the vision

Isis showed me the moment she fled the wrath of her jealous brother Set, pregnant with her son Horus, and hid herself in a thicket of papyrus.

  1. Then I hid, on and off, for years

For several years after that, I shared my shamanic work, my tarot, and my connection with Isis online. Then I would pull back. Then I would share again. I was touch and go with it, and I didn't understand why. I know now that there were subconscious patterns and past-life wounds I needed to heal before I could stand in this work with real confidence.

In my mid-twenties, three different psychics told me I had been burned as a witch in a past life. I had never said a word about it to any of them. I was also told I had not survived the Spanish Inquisition.

Those weren't my only lives. I've seen myself as a healer during a plague, working with cobwebs and mold. As a town baker who was forever burning her hands. As a laborer, working mud and mortar with my bare hands. As an Essene. I've been told I was an oracle at Delphi, and that one I feel in my bones. And yes... Lemuria. Basically, I'm an old soul, and I have worked tirelessly in a lot of lifetimes.

I've made my peace with every one of them. I went through those lives for a reason, and I've alchemized their pain into passion for this work. They sent me inward to define my beliefs, and my faith in God, for myself. I've left no stone unturned and no question inside me unanswered. That doesn't mean I have all the answers... everyone has to answer those questions for themselves. It means I'm not afraid of them anymore, and I'm not afraid to sit with yours.

  2. I almost became a doctor

Maybe it's the plague healer in me, but in this life I almost became a doctor. I earned a degree in psychology with a minor in biology, and I took the MCAT. I worked for a neurologist as a Parkinson's researcher, and later in the neurology wing of a large trauma hospital.

Then, while I was pregnant, my job required a medical choice I was not willing to make. I said no. I was mocked and ridiculed for asserting my freedom and protecting myself, and I walked away from the path I had worked toward for years. It was a real disappointment. But I knew a path that ridiculed me for protecting myself would never be the right one for me.

Meanwhile, my husband, who had been a yoga teacher back in Portland, decided to become a lawyer. He went to law school, and I went all in on staying home with our babies.

  3. I nearly died, and I stopped hiding

Then my youngest was born. I hemorrhaged, and I nearly died.

Coming that close to death woke up a new passion for life in me. I appreciate being alive more than I ever have. I'm here for a reason, and I'm not hiding the purpose I came here to bring anymore.

I think about Isis in the papyrus a lot these days. She wasn't hiding because she was weak. She was protecting what she carried until it was strong enough to meet the world. I had my own years in the papyrus... healing old lives, raising my babies, gathering my strength. Now I'm stepping out into the open.

  the starwalker

One foot in the ordinary, one foot in the stars

A starwalker lives in two places at once. One foot in the physical world... the school day, the laundry, the bread in the oven, the 1918 house I brought back to life. The other foot somewhere else entirely... the place the ancestors speak from, where Isis has been waiting, where your power animal is already standing at the edge of the trees.

Most people are taught to choose. Be practical, or be spiritual. Be serious, or be strange. I never could. So I walk the edge, and I come back with things.

I believe most deeply spiritual people go through a moment like mine, an initiation that makes them a starwalker. Afterward you can't unsee the magic, and you can't leave your ordinary life behind either. You learn to walk in both. Maybe you've already had yours.

That's what Isis is all about... finding the magic in the peak moments of magnificence, and in the mundane day to day, where we build our dreams step by step.

✧   what I believe   ✧

Four things I believe

These sit underneath every reading, every journey, and every conversation.

On being different

The world needs its weird ones.

The more of us who share our gifts, the weird ones, the prophetic ones, the witchy and spiritual and outsider ones, the better this world becomes. Whatever always made you feel different may be the very thing you came here to give.

Your gifts were never meant to stay hidden.

On your impact

Your life leaves a mark.

As long as we are alive, we have a lasting impact to make on this planet. I want you to feel that, and to really appreciate the difference you make, on the big days and the ordinary ones.

Nearly dying taught me that. I would love for you to learn it the gentle way.

On the big questions

Your answers have to be your own.

I did the deep work of defining my own beliefs and my own faith. That is exactly why I will never hand you a dogma, or ask you to believe what I believe.

My work is to walk beside you while you find what is true for you.

On pace

Build for the long haul.

Going all in and burning out are not the same thing. I work with a long view, and when I rest, I rest on purpose.

The dreams worth having get built step by step, in the mundane days as much as the magical ones.
